The Town of Herndon was incorporated in 1879 and grew steadily from a small village with little more than a railroad station and post office to a thriving dairy farming center and summer retreat for Washingtonians. Herndon remained a relatively quiet country village until the 1960's.

Each year, thousands of people enjoy a wide variety of free concerts and special events on Herndon's Town Green, including the Herndon Festival, and Friday Night Live!   Herndon is also home to the renowned Elden Street Players, an award-winning theatre group and there more than 100 restaurants nestled in and around the downtown area.
