Clifton, VA

(Back to Fairfax County Areas/Cities )

Located just over 25 miles from Washington, D.C., the historic Town of  Clifton is home to just 200 people. Clifton has maintained the charm and feel of a Norman Rockwell painting. The town has been around since the 1700's—initially as a plantation and earlier as Indian hunting grounds.  During the civil war Clifton was known as Devereux Station and became Clifton Station In 1868.  On March 10, 1902 Clifton Station was established as a Town by charter from the General Assembly.  In 1985 Clifton was designated a National Historic District.  The Community Hall, built in 1995 is Clifton's most recent addition and is decorated with four seasonal murals of the town painted by Lee Ruck.

 Living in Clifton

Many Clifton VA homes are over a hundred years old, and most of the properties are beautifully showcased atop large parcels of land. There was some development in the 70s and 80s, with planned communities like Little Rocky Run being added to the mix, but there was concern about the town losing its character and becoming too densely populated. To preserve green space and to maintain the character of the community, a rule was enacted that there was to be only one house per 5-acre lot. A large number of homes in Clifton are decidedly upscale, and surrounded by woodlands. There are also some beautiful equestrian homes to the north. Clifton VA homes currently have a median price of $700,000.

Several large parks, Fountain Head and Hemlock Overlook Regional Parks are located in Clifton and feature walking trails, swimming pools, miniature golf, playgrounds, indoor archery and more. The Heart In Hand restaurant in Clifton is one of the finer restaurants in the area that is open for Lunch, Dinner and Sunday brunch.  Many Washington notables have dined at the Heart In Hand including First Lady Nancy Reagan.
